Propecia comes in pill form and is used to treat hair loss. Your doctor will tell you how much you should take. Propecia is the brand name for the drug called finasteride.
What Kind of Hair Loss?
Propecia is the first and only FDA approved medication for the treatment of male hair loss on the top of the head and the middle front of the head.
Hair Loss Studies
Photographs of patients have been studied by teams of dermatologists. They have found improvements and reversal of hair loss in some regions of the head. The effects take several months and up to a year to be noticeable.
It has not been proven whether or not Propecia is effective for receding hairlines.
Who Can Use Propecia?
This medication should only be used my males 18 years or older. This drug should not be taken by children or females. If you are pregnant, do not handle any crushed finasteride tablets because the drug can be absorbed through the skin. There is a possibility of sexual abnormalities in babies that have been exposed to finasteride.
Side Effects
Less than 2% of men who took Propecia experienced temporary side effects such as decreased sex drive, decreased amount of semen, and difficulty getting an erection. These side effects stopped after the men stopped taking finasteride.
Long Term Hair Loss Care
Propecia is a long term solution to hair loss. Finasteride needs to be in your system on a long term basis in order to prevent more hair loss. If you stop taking finasteride, it is likely that your hair loss will continue. It may take up to 3 months before you see any improvements.
How much hair can I grow?
Results will vary with each patient. You will never grow back all of the hair that you have lost. This medication will help you grow some of your lost hair back and it will also prevent more hair loss.
Missing a Dose
If you forget to take a scheduled dose, take the missed dose as soon as your forget. If it is almost time for you next scheduled dose, just skip the missed dose and take the scheduled dose.
